ALT Linux is both impressive and somewhat temperamental. I have not done anything in particular to this installation - except trying out a bunch of desktop environments.
Result is that none work now.. menus screwed up etc. I used the Icewm SysV image and then tried Xfce (did not work properly at all), LxQt, LXDE, Mate (weird menu setup, difficult or not even possible to edit menus, and this made some desktop files refuse to run in LXDE). Gnome, Cinnamon, even tried Plasma.
One annoyance is the weird setup of Synaptic. It is not possible to list installed files of installed packages. An rpm thing?
One impressive thing is that you can run SysV instead of systemd without the limitations you see in antiX (debian based) or even Artix (arch based). (some software will not work or cannot be installed because the 'parent distro' was built around systemd).
Reinstall with the Xfce starterkit.

Bottom line this is a rock solid distro, looks kinda 2005 but still. Maybe a Russian lack of concern with detail?
Good thing I got the scan thing sorted, needed that to work on the laptop.

Yes I was aware it would work in CLI so silly question.

Btw the system now does not boot into GDM -installing and reinstalling login manager messed up the config. This is a config file in /etc somewhere but not same as in debian/ubuntu.
I found and fixed this on another installation but have forgotten which file it was and can't find it. (will reinstall this anyway).

Bit silly that this does not correct itself automatically on juggling login managers and that you don't get asked to choose login manager either. Now I have to hit alt F2 and login as root to start wdm, otherwise I cannot chose the WM I want :P (have gdm and wdm installed)

This is an excellent distro, getting to know it better. Unexpected solutions for things like shutting down Windowmaker, Icewm: you install packages for this.
I love getting such a polished setup for my fave WM windowmaker (the menu not so good, must make one)
WHY did they take away the best setup tool for windowmaker in all distros, WmakerConf (installed a Mageia rpm
This even has a graphical menu tool for windowmaker!!!
As I don't know enough Russian yet can be hard to find.

Should have thought of the symlink but did not expect it to be so simple
