Is there no software on Mageia5 for Testdisk?

Trying to run Testdisk on Mageia5 from a download the lack of a root screen appears to stop it running even with su. Is there no Testdisk in the repo's as I cannot load Testdisk from the software management panel?

I copied Testdisk to a DVD it runs OK on Mint 17.1 but will not run on Mageia5 which has no root screen.

That's the point installing the program under the users directory does not allow you to run it under a terminal with su
it just says command not found.

and WHAT exactly did you download ?

Testdisk onto a DVD by use of another another machine.

please explain what that means
Do not understand the question marks

you mean testdisk/photorec ?
it's a data recovery tool, and you cannot run it on a hard disk that is mounted.
that is why you usually use it from some live environment.
it doesn't require installation through a packet manager.

(phew, only 1 question mark)

I have done that on Fedora 21 and Mint17.1 on the harddisk.

I am trying to do the same with Mageia5

The reason is I have a problem using ALT rescue from a usb as I cannot recover the file to
an external usb. I cannot mount the external USB, any ideas why?
All I can do is recover the files to the harddisk and not
the external usb.

Some usb boots may be set up to make it difficult to use usb maybe. Not even sure you need to mount a drive in order to use testdisk.

Can you boot to the internal drive? If so then you could run testdisk from it I'd think too.

Almost every live cd could run testdisk even if it doesn't come with it. Just boot to live cd and use software manager to get testdisk if needed.

bscho, if you mean a program for testing disks, Mageia includes the smartmon tools.

Hii thanks no it's not that I want to run the file recovery program that is in Testdisk photorec.
I have loaded Mageia5 and have lost all my windows files.

I need to have a root terminal to run Testdisk and then I can specify where photorec will store the files in an external USB.
The problem I having with the ALT rescue USB is I cannot mount the external USB to recover the files. I have been able to do this
(mount an external USB) on Mint17.1 and Fedora21 using the root screen but cannot do it with Mageia5.

Thanks for your help
