When posting, I can see the, under 'Post icons', a set of tiny drawings. Below this, and under 'Additional options', the check box 'Disable smiles in text'.
The question: are the smilies reffered to in Additional Options a subset of the set of post icons? Regards.
<-- This is the title area where the post icon should appear
Try testing it out, maybe?
"Smilies" are simple text combinations that can be used to express an emotion or state. The server here will scan for and automatically replace certain smilies with images as it processes the page. Checking the "disable" option simply tells the server to not do the replacement, so that the original text appears unaltered.
Here are how smilies appear when the option is disabled.
(And hmm, it seems you're limited to a maximum of six images in a post, including smilies. That's new to me.)
The "post icons", OTOH, while using some of the same graphics, are graphics that only display in the title area above the post. Since they don't appear in the main text the server doesn't do any image substitution on them, and so they should not be affected by the disable option. Notice in particular how the phrasing of the option is: "Disable smilies in text".
I selected the "Big Grin" post icon for this post. Let's see if it shows up.
Thanks David. So, while text smilies are a large set (set A), and not specifically defined by LQ, the post icons are a little fixed set, predetermined by LQ (set B). Although perhaps, the number varies from member to member, if what you say is true (I'm seeing 14 post icons here).
From my side of the link, I see that some of the post icons are smilies at the same time (but not text smilies, I know). Now, suppose I always post without either post icons nor smilies. What should I do? I once clicked the 'no icon' radio button and there it remained for the rest of my posts.
OK. As for the 'Disable smilies in text' (DS for short), I never had to touch it or, at most, I did so once: I checked it. Many years elapsed and, a few days ago, I noticed a smily accidentaly dropped in my writing. So I examined the page, and discovered the DS was unchecked. I checked it.
But from that day --I repeat, no more than a week ago, I have had to check the box over and over again.
There still exist the following possibility: the DS box was always unchecked and I simply did not use any of those character combinations y wrote in your post. Regards.
are the smilies reffered to in Additional Options a subset of the set of post icons?
That means: is every smiley a post icon?
no definitely not...
The smiley that you select from Post Icons section are post icons only,if you need to put a smiley in your post text then choose one by clicking arrow on side of smiling face above your text box.
