Lightbulb Should the Programming Forum Have Subforums?

OK, just an idea... Of all the forums here on LQ, I think the Programming one is the most difficult to navigate through. On the first page itself, there's questions regarding C++, C, PHP, bash scripting, etc...

Wouldn't it be nice if there are Programming subforums? It doesn't have to be language-specific, but something broader... for example:

Shell Scripting (bash, ash, csh)
Web Programming (PHP, JSP, Perl)
C and C++ (I know they're not the same, this is just an example)
Python

An advantage of this is that we will have more targetted audiences on our questions/problems. Searching will also be easier and the results will be more relevant if we can filter it to search on only a particular subforum.

Please vote and give some comments

Well... it's about a week since I started this post... It seems that there's not much interest in the Programming forum... or that not many people realize that this poll is going on

there should be subforums to my opinion but if there is enough traffic on these forums forums without people is nothing and my knowlege is that programming forums here are not that active like the linux forums..

I feel that present time the Programming forum is fine the way it is. We don't get much traffic there like the other forums but find it very easy to navigate now, even though I don't answer many questions there, I don't necessarily think or feel dividing it up is, well, necessary just yet.

I think that subforums are good idea. Now I need to read many posts to see if I can help (what means: if I know the language, because most questions are rather basic). Subforums wouldn't make it ideal, but would help.

I'm all for the subforums in programming, but I agree with the fact that its a lower traffic forum (I wish it was much busier personally).

I voted yes, it would make a search easier for me if i could search a specific language forum.

[off topic]
I see a post almost daily of people asking for programming references, I was thinking someone make a sticky thread with all that info such as on-line references, good programming books etc...(most people ask for c and c++)
[/off topic]

The above off topicness would also be enhanced by subforum's in the programming forum.

I will probably not visit LQ much so discount my 'no' vote as you wish,.

I like the fact that it's not split up - I know a few languages and bits and bobs so it's easier to see any interesting questions w/o needing to go in and out of each forum,,

some forum rules / guidelines might help - like thread titles should start

PERL: my specific Q

etc

So long as people give an indication of what they need help with in their titles, I see no need for subforums right now. This doesn't strike me as a strongly-typed group.

Apologies for ressurecting this thread if its considered unneccessary. I voted Yes, but language specific. PHP programming is my forte, so I like to help people (well, try to) by answering their questions here. The programming forum can be a little cluttered, and I feel would be a much more usable resource if it was broken down into subforums - it would make relevant information much easier to find.

I agree 100%, and voted accordingly. While all forums seem to get a little cluttered sometimes with questions that belong somewhere else, at least having seperate sub-forums will provide some solice to those who are attempting to assist others.

EDITED TO ADD: I just realized that the thread was 3-1/2 years old. However, I stand by my vote. I'm sure there's a whole lot more Linux users and programmers today than there were in October 2003!
