LQ.org and something sucking up my cpu???

just wondering what it is on LQ.org that sucks up 100% of my cpu while loading? i'm not sure if it's an ad someplace or something else, but it happens when i log in, then when i select different forums...it's the only website that does this to my pc, which makes me curious as to what it is...i so notice something about "kona" something or other which might be the culpret but i can't find anything on the pages that seem to indicate that...just curious.

Try running 'top' while loading the page and seeing what process eats CPU.

as i suspected it would be, it's firefox-bin, as it's loading a webpage...but i cannot figure out what on the webpage is sucking up my cpu....it lasts maybe 3 seconds...and even freezes my mouse cuz it's taking 100% of the cpu....it's wierd, but it's definately an LQ.org thing, cuz of all the pages i visit, LQ.org is the only pages this happens with. it's fine after the first load...so maybe it's a cookie? but whatever it is, when i empty my cache, it starts all over with the 100% cpu...

*edit...i've just noticed this in the last week or so...but since then it's been pretty consistent...

My suggestion is become a Contributing Member. It doesn't cost much, it's a pretty worthy cause IMO and it enables you to turn the adverts off. I've been a CM for long enough that I don't even remember where the ads used to be, it's a nice feeling that

While I 100% support people becoming contributing members, if the ads are making the page laggy and hit 100% CPU, that might be something that Jeremy needs to look at.

Just a suggestion, but if you're using Firefox, the Adblock extension along with the Adblock Filter.G does a WONDERFUL job of killing adverts.

i appreciate the replies and suggestions. just out of curiousity i fired up seamonkey to see if it would make a difference, perhaps being a problem with firefox, but the same happens with seamonkey too. seems to be the ads. for what it's worth i'm using slack-current, 2.6.16.27, fluxbox 1.0rc2 and firefox 1.5.05. i tend to think it's the "kona" site, cuz it seems to hang on that for a bit...but i dunno. anyways, thanks again, and maybe it will clear up soon. i've not found any other posts about this, so maybe it's just my box...and if it's the ads...the little "glitch" is tolerable considering the amount of information i've gleaned off this site in the past...so it's all good

You're right to suspect kona.konterra (they provide the double underlined content link ads). Since this has been implemented I have experienced the same symptons. The page loads but scrolling, mouse and keyboard are unusable.

Eventually firefox pops up a window asking to stop the script. On one occassion firefox crashed and needed to be killed. Same problem using Konqueror so it doesn't seem to be a firefox specific issue. As stated at the top of the main forum page, after logging in this behaviour should stop . If it does not, report the problem.

edit/ btw, more posts regarding this can be found in the "website suggestions" forum.

I'd say Adblock Plus is even better.

I guess I'm always logged in and therefore haven't run into this kona thing.

However, I often see hangs while it's trying to access "google-analytics" or something similar-sounding to that. Shows up down in the Firefox status bar.

Not sure what you mean - we haven't added new google ads in a very long time. As for the Kontera ads, as mentioned previously these will never be enabled for logged in members and becoming a member will always be 100% free.

FWIW, even though the CPU issue only impacts non-members, I have opened up a bug ticket with the company. If they aren't able to expediently resolve the issue, we'll stop running the ads.
