So far, no one has quoted an entire post in it's entirety.

The quotes used above were clips of a message they intend to reply to or highlight. I don't mind on making clips that provide the reader with clues to the response. That would be a common way to quote.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I agree with the above post.

I have to say that, in my experience, over-quoting is not frequent enough to spark corrective action other than education. I agree that it's annoying, but I think that failing to use "code" tags when posting the output of commands, the content of files, and error messages is a far more significant problem.

Indeed, I suggest that "code" tags be made available in the Quick Post window.

Once again, I agree. it would make it so much easier to tell newbies how to use it.

I agree that it would make great sense to have a code block widget on the form all the time, not just for advanced edit mode.

Meanwhile, I feel that those who don't use it and also remain obtuse about it, are going to continue this practice. Or rather lack thereof.

I'm thinking about the last few days where we've have a long time member who repeatedly ignores the recommendation to use code blocks.

Just for info, I suggested this in https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ar-4175606776/ and Jeremy mentioned that it would be implemented during the next major code update.

i maintain that full quoting is a UI design issue:

Ondoho,

From your last and also post#13 where you brought up that concept.

I'm not sure I know exactly what behavior you are preferring.

For instance I've seen, but not participated in, other forum discussions where they seem to have "in reply to ..." pieces and the way I've seen them is it becomes not individual posts like seen in LQ, but one long thread with vertical lines shifting the older text farther and farther to the right as you continue. Much like an email thread. Did you mean that or something else?

Whether it is quote or reply, what would be the different behavior exactly?

We know how quote works on LQ now.

What would reply do?

Just refer to the post it was replying to? I assume you know the quote already does this using a hyperlink in the quote pointing back to the original post made by the quoted person:

it's a UI thing.
i am read the last post of a thread, want to write something, and the buttons i see are "report", "quote".
to actually see the "Post reply" button, i have to scroll further down.
people being as lazy and thoughtless as they are, that's the main problem: it's ___easier___ to press the already-visible "Quote", without giving it any further thought.
Putting the already slightly larger "Post reply" button right besides the "Quote" button would help in some cases (many, is my guess).

and just to clarify: this is a hypothetical me. i do not have a problem with this myself, i am just trying to see things from a notorious full-quoter's point of view.

Ondoho is completely right. The location of these buttons is counter-intuitive. As the “Post reply” button does not need to create references to single posts within the same thread, it can be placed anywhere without the risk of confusion. So why not alongside quote and report. The program logic is of no interest to the users.

I support ondoho's request.

All the more, because the modification concerns only the location of 1 button on the page... Now that I think about it. The entire change can be done by applying a negative top-margin and some space in front, even without touching the box of the last posting.

I guess I never thought of that detail.

I hit CTRL-END to scroll rapidly to the end of the thread and get to the window which is there. Long ago I noticed the slight difference between the fact that there is a Post Reply button and that there is the Quick Reply window where you can just type and then hit the Post Quick Reply button.

Sure that would help enhance the user interface.

Meanwhile what I feel the thread was discussing was how other posts are quoted.
