There is zero need to be sarcastic in this case. And no idea why the "LQ Guru" tag seems to trigger certain folks, when it's just something that LQ does after a certain number of posts.
Is there a way to block certain individuals so their replies or posts do not show up?
Here's the main problem: you're expecting some kind of answer, and there's really no way to rule out answers you don't like.
Actually you need to expect the unexpected. Why do you ask if you don't want to know the real answer?
Not really all that helpful. You actually need to click on Site FAQ — Reading and Posting — Dealing with Troublesome Users which finally refers you to your Control Panel where Edit Ignore List is one of 20 options. I have 5 people listed who seldom contribute anything meaningful but clutter the General Forum with foolish posts. Not that they are the only ones ignored — most of whom style themselves Gurus and Sages!

You've described three clicks.
A simpler alternative is click on FAQ, type "block user", press return.
The short answer to the OPs question is “no”. Putting someone on your ignore list only suppresses the content of their posts. It does not “block” them. As has been said, ignoring a member is as simple as not replying to them. Putting them on your ignore list helps only in that you won’t see what they say (unless you choose to), with the risk that one doesn’t see a post that actually answers the question at hand.
I do note that using the ignore list does block PMs and email contact from the member blocked.
As to “LQ Guru,” that is but the default designation for a user who has made more than 5000 posts. It is not “self styled”. Some (DavidMcCann and I, for two) have opted to select one of the five other designations available for a member in that category…I don’t see that choosing not to do so says anything about said member. (IMO)
