FAQ needs updating please.
I looked at my profile, the LQ rules (where I expected it) and the site FAQ (my second guess) and didn't see anything on P(ersonal/rivate)M(essaging). I was trying to PM a mod, and couldn't find out how, then I found a post which mentions 150 posts before it is enabled.
The pm wasn't for anything like spam or troubled post, but a request for more information about what they were saying (went through a bunch of posts and found out why they were saying what they were, aka the link that I was hoping to read). I just thought this should be somewhere in the FAQ's (guessing I am not the only one who has looked for it).
You can send email to users via LQ where you do not get to view the specifics of their email address. Not sure if it appears the same way all the time, here's part of the FAQ which talks about it http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ontact_members. What I can do is click on the hyperlink for your username and I see a pull down list, things like allowing me to search for other posts by you, etc. One of the options is to send you an email.
And if you just left click and ignore the menu on a given user, it brings you to their page on LQ which is public and allows you to also send email or post a visitor message, or a private message. Which is to say that if someone cannot yet receive a private message, they can receive a visitor message. The safer bet may be to just send them an email, which will give them an alert much like they get when there is thread activity.
