I also very confuse about this rule. Sometimes, abbrevation is OK, sometime it against rule. It is not fair for new bee.
Nothing to be confused about; text-speak is FAR different than an abbreviation. Saying "etc." instead of "etcetera", or SSD in place of "Solid State Disc" is abbreviation. Saying "pls hlp. thx u", is what's at issue. Simple to avoid; spell out common words and don't be lazy.
Well, that seems fairly clear cut. It also matches what other people have said in this thread. So, to sum up, the mood of the community seems to be that acronyms are OK, even though some of the ones used here strike me as being more like in-jokes and therefore perhaps offputting to newbies. Mis-spelled words are not OK.
As this is not a "forum parliament" of sorts, and seeing as people will be people regardless (and I just received a (work) email from someone ending in "lol" ...), I would have to conclude that there's not much you can do about it - though I agree completely with TB0ne's assessment.
