Talking miracle - X runs without NVIDIA driver

Hi everyone.

I'm so excited.

I was installing MDK 9.1 2nd time (newbie) today and believe or not I DIDN'T have to install those NVIDIA graph. drivers.

I'm shocked.

I had too many problems to install it before (and tried yesterday without success). It didn't work,I mean X.

But today? I'm installing fresh Mandrake OS. But different from last times was that I decided which programs I'll install. So I installed and before I rebooted and lauched its Mandrake 9.1 I saw (as usually) "graphic NOT configured".So I tried and I could make all kinda changes.Like resolutions, etc. And then I pressed something like "try" and it was working.

I still don't get it. i had to post it.I'm so happy.Hope it is gonna work,I hate installing those NVIDIA graph. drivers. ( everyone does )

I'm so excited.Do you think it is possible? It should be because I erased old MDK partitions ( which wasn't working anyway - NVIDIA ).Don't have any idea.Do you?

Great. So now I can do what I wanted and learned.

It should work fine, but don't expect to play any 3D games just yet! You can use the GUI quite nicely without the nVidia specific drivers, but you won't get OpenGL games to work at any decent framerate.

thanx,but

When I did my 1st Linux install few months ago,I couldn't run X without NVIDIA driver.I couldn't make any changes while installing it.Today I could somehow.

Well I'm not gonna play any games,so it is fine.I got a lot to learn about Linux yet.Not time for playing games.

Take a look in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. In the section Device, what is the value of Driverr? Does it say 'vesa', 'nv' or something else?

If it is "nv" that is just the regular driver; changing it too 'nvidia' after you install the drivers will let you use them(the drivers).

Congrads!

nope

Actually everthing works perfect. I don't need to play any games and won't take those hard steps getting graphic drivers work.I couldn't get it done before,so I did new installing of MDK 9.1,but installed more stuff then usually.I even removed XF86Config-4 as some1 before helepd me.this is probably why it is working.
I was just surprised it works without NVIDIA driver Because it never worked before without them.
