Character LCD WORKS!!! hoot hoot!
after struggling since july i finally got my Matrixorbital 20x4 character lcd running using lcdproc. now i can show vital statistics of the machines on my network (such as uptime, processor load etc...) without taking up a vc or X real estate. YEAH!
Cool stuff, those LCD's, I used one in this project, but they are a pain to get in working order. Those MatrixOrbital displays, do they have their wiring in place when you buy them? The one I got required some soldering to get wired up.

yeah... they come 100% wired and even have an rj232c port on the back.... btw, nice project...
mtxorbital is in canada i think....
btw, what mp3player prog did you use to output to lcdproc?
irmp3. The player itself is mpg123, irmp3 provides a layer between the player and lirc(the infrared receiver deamon) and also handles the output to lcdproc. I'm gonna make a couple more of these for friends, but the wiring of the display is very time-consuming, so I'm gonna look into those MatrixOrbital displays.
