Beginners Only! PostGreSQL, PHP, Apache and RedHat 9.0 ! (migrating from windows2k)

-> This is a forum specifically for this compination of linux

If you intend to run:

RedHat 9.0 ->

-> Apache (Web Server, equivelent of IIS)

- - + PHP
- - + PSQL-PostGres-mod

-> PostMaster / PostGreSQL (Database Server, similar to Access)

- - + pgAdmin III

(You could also run MySQL, however I can't help you on that)

-> I love this forum and feel like giving something back to the archives, open source only exists on a give and take basis, so here goe's.

Server Installation:

RH9 install is easy, but the packages are important.... if you want to make a production web server then you will atleast need:

www.PostGresSQL.org
www.PHP.net
www. Apache.org

These all come with the 3 RH9 cd's, however MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE PHP MOD FOR PGSQL. If you didn't do this because you didn't know about it at the time, you should really uninstall PHP from the System Settings -> Add/Remove Programs.

Then reinstall the web server, then reinstall the webserver with these packages:

php-pgsql-mod-thingy
php-whatever-version-it-is
apache

That should make sure your server actually goes!

---

Installing PostGres:

READ THE MANUAL WHICH IS ONLINE, IT IS THE ONLY WAY, IT WILL BE YOUR BIBLE FOR THE NEXT MONTH ATLEAST!

Sorry for shouting, it's important!

----

Installing Apache:

Pretty Simple, has one config file....

Important: You must have a seperate user for running the server, I call mine "Apache", because when you setup postgres, you will need to give access to certain users, if you make apache's user called apache... well... you get it....
