Thumbs up 2 thumbs up for linux.

Just spent about 1.5 hours having to edit the file names and copy all of the contents of one of my Windows drives over to another directory and back again so that I could get it able to be backed up, all because Windows (originally built on top of MSDOS) simply isn't up to handing arbitrary long path and file names (and it also has other sometimes crash causing deficiencies when it comes to file system robustness).

Linux, on the other hand, from what I understand, can handle paths up to about 2 million characters or so, which is essentially arbitrary long by today's standards. Further, its file system is rock solid, with none of the ricketyness that I have seen in Windows.

Amen!

Quite a few years back, when Win95 hit the shelves, I was working at a studio that used a lot of Macs. I remember the boss commenting on the filename-length issue:

"Windows 95 can have filenames more than 8 characters. Big deal, Macintosh had them first."

If only I had known anything about Unix I could have corrected him.

Moved: Seems more suitable in the Success Stories forum since there really isn't a question involved. Regards.
