New to the forum, NOT new to Linux Questions

Hi everybody,
The last time I visited LQ was way back, 10-08-08, which was about 2.5 years after I joined the community. Sad to say that I never bothered to post anything, but I presume such is life.
Recently retired, just short of 1 year, my first Linux installation was I believe way back in the early 90's where I firstly installed a dual booting, Linux + Windows, for my son and then installed a server for my Home/Office network. If my memory serves me right I used Debian for both at the time.
Now I help senior citizens with computer related problems here, almost free of charge. The latest victim of Microsoft suffered from a non starting XP Media centre problem. Not being able to get that anywhere, I have installed Linux with the natural teething problems associated with the old hardware.
It is currently running on the latest version of UBUNTU but not satisfactory to my standards as there are a couple of problems. However I know that over the next couple of days I will resolve it by finding a more suitable distro.
What are you looking for when installing an operating system? I look for ease of use but above all, a relatively fast system.
To all your success with Linux
