I began using Ubuntu when Windows XP support was discontinued. I started with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, tried a few other distributions, read various forums and documentation, and continue to experiment. Currently have an older hp desktop (2006) with Pentium D x86-64 with 1GB ram, an older hp mini laptop with an ATOM 32-bit chip with 1GB ram, and a gifted msi laptop i5 x86-64 with 8GB ram. I have set up all machines to run Debian Stretch 9.1 and Linux Mint Sonya 18.2. The old desktop is too under powered to run the Cinnamon or gnome desktops. So, I run LXDE and XFCE desktops on it. The other machines are able to run Cinnamon without bogging down with Debian or Linux Mint. I have deleted Windows from all machines and only run Linux now.
I backup each system and machine on Friday every week. Backups are made with Deja-dup to 16GB USB sticks, one for each machine, with a folder for each distribution. I have had to restore from the USB stick only a few times. So, my process is meeting my needs.
