Cool Member Intro

Morning. Just joined this forum today. Decided to try linux as was fed up with all the viruses , browser hijacks etc that I get with Windows XP. I also like the idea of having a system you have complete control over.

I am currently still running Windows XP pro, but have tried SUSE 10, Ubuntu, Mandrake & the next inline will be Fedora Core 5.
Still getting to grips with the setup - Id quite like to get used the the gui first & then use the text control centre. That is what Ill have to get over!!

I want to build a media centre pc with run mythtv on it & have a dual boot on my sons pc, with Windows XP so he can play his games etc, but not worry re the viruses etc.

I have tons to learn but think I have come to the right place!!

Hello Kevin,

Welcome to LQ!

I'd say your right about coming to the right place Answers to questions are usually prompt, and in general there is tonnes of features on the site to browse through such as the tutorials, reviews, and the HCL.

The seach engine has improved over the years ten fold, and thats always the best place to start, cause you can see there is over 2 million posts here now, so if a problem arises then good chance it was something that someone ran into before.

Hope you fair well in your learning :P

Hello Kevin!

Welcome to LQ! yep, you have certainly come to the right place.

I suggest that you get to grips with the commandline interface first- it's not that hard, there are some good tutorials out there for using bash. Then you will understand what is going on- not just click on the screen...

but then I'm a geek, and I'd say that...

SuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora are good distributions to start with!
(Ubuntu 6.06 being my personal favourite of the 3)

Welcome to LQ, Kevin. My son's computer typically lasted about a week before it was messed up. I then got him a Linux machine (Linspire) and it has run smoothly now for over 5 months.
