Smile Hello from Australia

G'day from Brisbane, Australia

For all intents and purposes I'm a Linux newbie. Have just installed Linux Mint 19 (which I think is great so far) on my second desktop.

With the help of people on the LM forums I have got it up and running but I figure membership here would also be useful - the more input to some questions, the merrier, eh.

It would appear my wifi card has killed itself, so I'm on the lookout for a new one - inexpensive, available locally (or at least quickly) and (most importantly) one that will work in Linux!

I'll do a forum search but if anyone happens to know of a relevant thread then feel free to point me there

Welcome to LQ.

As regards the wifi card, if it's Broadcom or Realtek, you may have a driver problem; they can be got working on Linux, but it usually takes some extra steps. You can use the lspci command to find out the chipset, then post in the Networking/wireless forum. Otherwise, if you must purchase new, Intel Inside generally works and plays well with Linux.

Thanks. lspci doesn't work as the system doesn't even recognise that the thing is plugged in.
The aerial and plug for ch0 is broken leaving ch1, ch 2 remaining. Not sure if this may be the problem but I'd have thought that would only affect reception strength not whether its detected at all.

I think I'll need to buy a new card or usb (obviously with a desktop, card would possibly be better?)

I brought the following wifi card and it works like a charm;

Code:
Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9227 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

Thanks I'll have to see if I have a spare slot for it.

My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H specs: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard...-D3H-rev-1x#sp
my last now evidently broken card was a PCIe x 1

Edit to add:

Maybe this one would work - has Atheros chipset which I gather works well with Linux?

Edited further to add:

I've included this in case it's helpful to anyone posting in this thread - my current specs.
I'm connected to internet via ethernet cable currently.

It looks like it uses the same driver as the one I linked before, and it looks like the same/similar chipset too.

According to this: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN881ND

What about the TP-Link TL-WN851ND Wireless N Pci Adapter, version 1, with the Atheros AR9227 chipset?
(details confirmed by vendor)
I can swap my wrong purchase for this one if it will work.

I saw this info https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN851ND
also 3rd from bottom on this link

also info in the linked documents at top of this page: https://www.tp-link.com/us/download/TL-WN851ND.html

but I'm not sure whether that actually means it will work or not?

Thank you. Hopefully the vendor will come to the party and agree to the swap. I think they will.

Edit: They have ! Should be sorted by the end of this week ! Thanks again to all who offered advice. Cheers
