Dunno yet. Again, I think I'd like to get things more stable before adding any major components.
Good plan, i would do the same right now as well. Get one thing to work good, its the unix way.

make ISOs. The cue/bin files can be burned directly to CD with cdrdao or cdrecord. I haven't tried it, but k3b also supports burning cue/bin files.
I have (k3b 0.11.17), but its strange. It burns it on my cd -rw, but when i try to play the cd or mount it, its blank (gives that infamous "wrong fs type, superblock", which i am sure you have all seen if you have used linux for a while). Only way i have been able to burn the cue/bin is with 'cdrdao write --device /dev/hdc /path/to/cue/file.'

As long as it's still encoding fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's just an interesting mystery.
Nah, it encodes fine. I suppose its the mystery to solve...could be a bug somewhere too.
Whoa! 20 pages long thread? We pwn linuxanswers/discussion forum. lol.
I have mjpegtools installed but tovid can't recognize it. Any ideas, Im using SuSe 9.2. I have a mtools if thats what it is called. Im new to SuSe, so I suppose that this is either not what most distros hold there software, or SuSe just did this, im still learning so bear with me. TY.

Checking for required and recommended programs...
==========================================
mplayer/mencoder: /usr/bin/mplayer
mjpegtools: /usr/bin/yuvfps /usr/bin/yuvscaler /usr/bin/mplex
The mjpegtools package was not found, or is incomplete.
This package is needed for the following suite components:
tovid (Converts video to (S)VCD or DVD mpeg format)
If you want to use the above components, please install mjpegtools.
You can get mjpegtools from http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/
ffmpeg: /usr/bin/ffmpeg
transcode: /usr/bin/transcode
normalize: /usr/bin/normalize
ImageMagick utilities: /usr/bin/convert
dvdauthor: /usr/bin/dvdauthor
vcdimager: /usr/bin/vcdimager
Some required or recommended software was not found. You can still
install the tovid suite, and install the other required software
later. Do you want to proceed with installation (y/n)?
I'm looking at the configure script and I dont have yuvfps, or mpeg2enc or mp2enc
Whoa, long list. Is that your entire /usr/bin directory or something?
Mtools is not the same thing as mjpegtools. Mtools is for reading DOS disks. It looks like you do have a few of the mjpegtools utilities, so I wonder if those are being provided by another package, or an older version of mjpegtools (though I can't imagine mjpegtools not having mpeg2enc, the most important part!) Here's the RPM for SuSE mjpegtools. I don't know how SuSE's installation procedure works, so I can't really help with getting it installed; if you do have mjpegtools installed already, see if you can upgrade to a newer version.
Probably Yast+Packman could do it in Suse....But i am no expert with Suse..
But could tovid check for version of the programs as well (dunno if its doing that already)? I think that would be good since it eliminates variables when people get stuck...

It does for some programs (like ImageMagick, which must be version 6+) but not mjpegtools, since most of the utilities don't tell you the version number. I just tested it, though, and mplex does print a version number. I don't know how useful it would be, since I have no clue what versions work, aside from the one I'm using
The new release is coming along slowly. I've made quite a few changes (especially to idvid) and really want to get 0.17 released, but at the same time I don't want to leave anything horribly unfinished.

I have this already, I used it to install mplayer. Im going to find the version installed.
I have version 1.6.2-54 installed. hope this helps you, ill try the link you provided and install that
Do you think it has anything to do with mpeg2 being proprietary? like redhat with mp3?
So this is strange I deleted mine, and installed the one from your link, and I still have the same problem. Im going to google a bit about this.
Ok I have it working now, It seems that it is incomplete, and thanks who mentioned pacman, I thought yast would pic it up, but it didn't but I did get it from here. http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=154 so maybe someone could add this link to the install documentation, so as someone doesn't ask the same question twice.

oldstinkyfish - thanks for your investigation. I've added your solution to the FAQ, which will be updated when 0.17 is released. Also, if you guys have other suggestions for what questions could be on the tovid FAQ, let me know so I can add them.
I worked more on 'makemenu' tonight and it's near completion. I also revised all the web documentation in preparation for the new release (to be uploaded when it's released). I gotta go through all the scripts and make sure things are working, and do some more checking of 'makexml' since I made heavy revisions to it. Hopefully in the next 3-4 days, I can get 0.17 posted.

Cleaning up...
=========================================================
Done!
Your encoded video should be in a file called FIGHTCLUB.%d.mpg.
If you find that the final result is too big, you can reduce its
size without re-encoding by using the postproc utility with the
-shrink option. If the video and audio don't match up, you can
use postproc with the -audiodelay option to fix it.
=========================================================
Your video can be run through some post-processing to increase quality
and remove noise. It can really improve the video quality, but may
slow down encoding somewhat.
use high quality (y/n)? n

It depends. For most of the videos I've tried, the quality enhancement and denoising results in a smaller file size. I think it's because noisy/grainy video requires more bitrate than smooth, clean video. But the quality-enhancement option also includes some things to keep high-frequency information, use higher quality encoding, less quantization, etc., so there's a definite possibility that it'll result in larger files. I won't know for sure until I get a nice collection of statistics.

just for statistical information if you need it
It looks like it didn't finish correctly. Did you end up with a finished .mpg file? If not, try running with -debug, and check the .log file after it finishes.
Huh, nice faq. Its easy on the eyes with the colors and formatting.
I use high quality/denoise option all the time. The file size doesn't increase all that much...but i have only encoded to svcd, dunno what a half-dvd or dvd would end up doing..

True...this way you can compare it to yours. Mjpegtools on debian, at least, give a version number by just running 'dpkg -l mjpegtools', but individual program version is the way to go since there are just too many package managers.

Actually it finished just fine, but gave me two mpg, one about 750megs, and the other 250mb
I think its because I choose svcd, so It spit out two files.
Um, I did however have to put in the full pathname in tovid-interactive even though my avi was in the working directory.
Do you want me to run with -debug all the time? If so maybe you could add it to tovid-interactive also?

I think it does that everytime the encoded file is over ~715mb or something since that is burnable on one cd. So you're gonna get that everytime regardless of what you encoded in (vcd, svcd) and is over 715mb.
Just so you know, ive been messing with kvcd, ksvcd in tmpenc, so far the quality is terrible, the quality that tovid spits out for svcd is twenty times better, actually, per quality of the source its almost the same, Enough that I dont notice. I wonder if I bring down the audio bitrate if I can fit this onto on cd. Sorry im typing out loud.
