It seems the text for step 6 is missing (at least now) as well. Does anyone have it?

I poked at it a little bit and I don't think it can handle multiple files, but I did find a utility called avimerge, which will take all your avi files and merge them into a single avi file that you can then run through this script.

What would be a good language for writing a gui tool for doing the whole process?

This might seem like an odd problem but I think I know why steps 4 and 6 are missing their lines. When you put the words in "<>" it thinks it is a formatting tag and will not show them. How did you get them to show up }-{ello?

Process does not work if .avi is over 700 MB

I have a couple of movies where the actual file is larger than 700 MB. When I do this process, the file "movie.mpg" comes out to around 2.6 GB, but when I preview the clip on kaffeine, it is only 30-40 min long and it cuts off the rest of the movie. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks

how long should step 1 (transcode ) take?

I tested a small(8mb) avi I had and it was still working almost 2 hours later.

Im testing a 665mb avi now and it's been running for 45 minutes. I was going to let it run all day and see what happens. But I was just curious as to how long its supposed to transcode.

thanks

It depends on your processor speed. At home (AMD X2) I can do 60 fps and a movie will encode in 1 hour, but on my laptop (P4) I can only do 11 fps and encoding takes around 6 hours.

sounds very wrong

a 14 Mb avi file from my camera is worth 23s of movie
on a sempron using mencoder is re-encoded in 22s (at about 50 fps)
so depending on what you do, and the processor, roughly a time factor of 0.1 to 10 x movie time
would make sense

are there seriously no good GUI tools (or even bash scripts)?

I wrote a couple of bash scripts...but have problems with different aspect ratios...depends on the dimensions the original video was created with.

convert AVI to MPG.
http://bash-v.chovy.com/avi2mpg.sh

convert MPG to DVD (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS)
http://bash-v.chovy.com/mpg2dvd.sh

The third step (not included) would be to burn it with KDE, Nero, etc.

If anyone wants to contribute some changes, please PM me and I'll add them in.
My main problem is accounting for a variety of dimensions and aspect ratios. I got tired of burning coasters so posted here.

I have a transcoding program called DeVeDe. I converted an XviD file to DVD, but the conversion wasn't 100% accurate. I'm testing it vs. this method right now.

just thought i'd chip in my solution for making a compliation dvd (such as several episodes of a tv show)
this works for almost any file format but might not get 5.1 sound
if you have 10 or fewer tracks its simple
if you have 11-100 tracks theres one extra step
(one extra step for each 0 place value)
for <= 10 tracks name them track0.avi(mpg,flv,mov, whatever)-track9.whatever
for <= 100 mumber them track00.whatever - track99.whatever
and so on
then write the following bash script;
Code:
for ((x=0;x<=9;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track$x.whatever -target dvd track$x.mpg
done
for 10 or fewer tracks, alter the <=9 to whatever the top numbered track is
or if you have betwwen 10-100 tracks it would look something like
Code:
for ((x=0;x<=9;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track0$x.whatever -target dvd track0$.mpg
done
for ((x=10;x<=99;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track$x.whatever -target dvd track$x.mpg
done
altering the <=99 number to the highest track number
in the unlikely event you have more then 100 tracks
Code:
for ((x=0;x<=9;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track00$x.whatever -target dvd track00$.mpg
done
for ((x=10;x<=99;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track0$x.whatever -target dvd track0$x.mpg
done
for ((x=100;x<=999;x+=1))
do
ffmpeg -i track$x.whatever -target dvd track$x.mpg
done
and change the <=999 to the highest number track you have
*yes that was redundant but some people like me want working code when they first are learning about something new*
now
if you did a whole season (or god forbid a whole series) of a tv show at once, chances are you have more then one disk full of information, now create folders (disc1-discX) X beign the number of disks it takes to separate all the mpg data to fit the disk size (i use 4.7GB media)
renaming the files track1 to track X.mpg (more then likely not going to be in the double digits on one cd but it shoudnt matter to use the extra place holder 0s here since you are going to define the order by hand in the next step

use this code from the answer
[code]
<dvdauthor dest="DVD">
<vmgm />
<titleset>
<titles>
<pgc>
<vob file="trackX.mpg" chapters="0,5:00,10:00,15:00,20:00;25:00"/>
</pgc>
</titles>
</titleset>
</dvdauthor>
[code]
make sure to repeat this part
Code:
       <pgc>
         <vob file="trackX.mpg" chapters="0,5:00,10:00,15:00,20:00;25:00"/>
       </pgc>
for each .mpg file and edit the chapter times accordingly (the above example is 5 minute chapters for a 30 minute file)
and save one copy of in each disk (note this is why i said to renumber them track 1-track x for each disk so you dont have to edit this file each time unless one disk has fewer files then you simply remove the excess title entries

from there on out follow the instructions as is in the guide

god luck
