alright i guess i don't know how to recompile a kernel i tried the original directions by putting that .config file and then typing 'make-kpkg -rev MEPIS.3.3 kernel_image' and isntead of going through and saying yes or no to a million questions all it did was run through the list again

so i thought cool and tried to modprobe it and i still got the invalid format error

When it asked you all those questions that first time it was using your answers to generate its own .config file.

Just now, when you copied the proper .config file over, it would have asked you if you wanted to overwrite the .config file that was there. You should have chosen yes. Did you?

If so, then you probably need to start over with the fresh kernel source. Make only compiles when it thinks it needs to, and it sounds like it doesn't think it needs to since you have just compiled already.

Working with the kernel can get annoying.

And don't forget to make, make install the berlios drivers again. If you didn't do that, I would try that first! Before deciding you need to mess with another kernel make!!

Good! Sorry it took so long. I don't know if I'd have had the patience to answer all those config questions on that first kernel make like you did.
