Smile Wireless/Routing question

Hello!

I've just setup RH7.3 on an old Compaq box here, got it on the LAN, installed a PCMCIA ISA convertor, installed my Orinoco wireless card, got that running. Then got DHCPD running so it's dishing out IPs on the wireless interface.

From my laptop, via wireless, I can now get an IP and I can ping both interfaces of the RH box. However I can't ping from the laptop to the Internet.

I've added:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

to /etc/rc.d/init.d/rc.local

but still no good.

The wireless interface on the RH box is 192.168.0.1. I'm dishing this out as the gateway IP to my clients. Is this OK?

Also, I selected a medium security firewall during the RH install and I'm wondiering if this is causing problems.

I don't whether I need to configure tables, add a route or what!

If anyone can advise it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul.

yeah, you most probably need to set up ip masquerading. This will mean that all the machines connecting to the gateway will be able to get at the net without actually touching. have a look in the red hat setup utilities or manually do it with the iptables rules. Not sure where red hat puts these so you'll have to look around.

Also read the iptables man page. Near the bottom look at the ip masqerading and DNAT SNAT stuff. That is roughly what you need.
