Wireless RFMON mode, orinoco

As near as I can tell, I am running the following:

Fedora Core 3 (Kernel 2.6.10)
pcmcia-cs.i386 v3.2.7-2.2
wireless-tools v1:27-0.pre25.3
SMC 2632W (v1) wireless NIC

I seem to be running the orinoco drivers (determined via lsmod). I've also since discovered that you can run Prism2 cards using the orinoco drivers.

Neither the iwpriv nor the iwconfig commands will put the card into monitor mode.

Kismet starts up (seemingly error free), but does not capture any packets, and I'm still able to surf the web while Kismet is running. So, I'm guessing I'm not in monitor mode.

I seem to recall reading an article that stated the patched orinoco drivers were included in pcmcia-cs v3.1.3 and higher.

How do I determine the version of my orinoco drivers?

Do I still need to patch these in order to get into monitor mode?

[Trival fact: This card and Kismet worked fine when I was running SuSE 9.1, I have since leveled my machine to install FC3]

Thank you.

Thumbs up SOLUTION

Well, if nothing else, this experience really enhanced my google searching skills. A couple of things I learned I feel I'd like to share:

1. Apparently, orinoco drivers can run/support Prism2 cards. Still not sure how/why that works, but in the case of the SMC2632W v1, it does.

2. http://www.tipsybottle.com/technolog...OWTO-FAQ.shtml is the BEST document I've ever seen to talk you through updating/patching drivers! Kudos to Ritchie@tipsybottle.com (the apparent author).

I hope this stuff will help someone else in the future!
