wireless problem with Ubuntu

I have Ubuntu 5.1 and I have configured the wireless network and it is a pcmcia card, but the thing is that the Link encap is = to ethernet and I cannot to the access point?? Yet it is configuered as wireless but no signal neither pulse could someone tell me what to do?

What make + model of wireless PCMCIA card is it, and have you managed to install the appropriate drivers for the card? If so, how did you install them? It may just be that the drivers aren't installed correctly which is stopping you from accessing your wireless network.

thanks but it was automatically installed and it is an smc pcmcia card one more thing to install the ndiswrapper i needed a directory in the /lib/modules/2.6.1/build and I do not have it could someone tell me if that is a package or how do I add it. By the way the wireless card is called ra0. thanks a lot.
