Question Trouble Getting Knoppix STD v0.1 to recognise a USB dongle as a Wireless Device

I am running Ubuntu 7 (as ever good South African does) with absolutely no problems.
I decided however, to further my linux knowledge after doing a networks security course as part of Computer Science 3 at university, and so tried Knoppix STD v.01 (after hearing great things about it).

Ethernet works fine, but (as so many other people have had issues with) wireless is not quite as bug free.

I am trying to use a Cisco Systems Linkysys USB wireless dongle.

Every time i try to make install ndiswrapper, i get a whole bunch of warnings:

Code:
ntoskernel.h:#### warning: data definition has no type or storage class
and 2 errors:
Code:
make[1]: *** [crt.o] Error 1
make[1]: leaving directory {dir}
make: *** [install] Error 2
and it quits the ndiswrapper install.

I can only think it's because i've got the wrong version of ndiswrapper for the S-T-D kernel (using ndiswrapper v 1.46 on Knoppix v 2.4.21-sfx) also as it is a live CD, there might be read/write issues. Not quite sure (never used liveCD's before)

So after days of messing around, i finally managed to force install the drivers using :
Code:
./ndiswrapper -i {driver name}.inf
and then forced it to load to the device by using:
Code:
./ndiswrapper -a XXXX:XXXX {driver name}
but still, in "menu">>"wireless tools">>"Wireless Card Config" or in iwconfig it cannot find any wireless devices... but ndiswrapper clearly says that it has loaded the drivers to the device.

I've searched the man pages and read the readme's in /etc/wlan/ as well as the Wireless RTFM's and the closest i've come is that the Wireless RTFM makes mention of some hotplug script i need to run in order to get it working...

I've honestly searched hundreds of forums, and read as many posts and README's as possible, but to no avail.
If someone knows of a decent step by step guide for not exactly a n00b, but not an advanced user, i'd love to be pointed to that direction..

And if anyone is willing to type out a response, that'd be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Jono
