Wireless internet works but not networking

I ditched MS in about Jan. 2017. They were a good company for a while, but what they have become is entirely unacceptable. The computers I refer to here run Mint 19.1 (named Dingo) - (Zuit's Identical twin sister) and 19.2 (named The Rabbit) - (referring to the killer rabbit of Antioch)

I have an hp machine (19.1) connected to a printer (wireless, but I used a USB wire) that I have connected to network router wirelessly (the cable I had failed). Printer worked, internet worked, network did not. I'm still a newb because of a youtube addiction; I decided to try to get the filesharing going.

I installed samba on Dingo (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=290553) but to no avail.

I noticed on Dingo I had left the malfunctioning ethernet cable plugged in and merely switched to wireless on the system tray. I disconnected the wire and "reset" (I can't remember how) the connection. Now the Rabbit has icon for Dingo and vice versa. When I click on either one it says "opening (the rabbit/dingo) click here to cancel" for a couple seconds and then "failed to retrieve list from server: Connection timed out"

I thought perhaps it need samba common bin (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=262854) so I tried sudo apt-get samba-common-bin. Dingo installed it, The Rabbit already had it.

The Rabbit is wired and was functioning when I started working on Dingo about 12 hours ago, but would not connect to Dingo. Now the rabbit won't even connect to its own router. I'll have to start a new thread for that because the rabbit isn't wireless.

I remember somewhere along the line I typed gksu gedit avahi... umm here it is (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...185410#p960482) and the rabbit gave no error message but dingo said gksu doesn't exist. After this the rabbit had extra icons in the network window named rabbit smb and rabbit file share.

I ran apt-get autoremove on Dingo and it displayed extra icons (that didn't work) in the network window as well. I ran apt-get autoremove on the rabbit and now it says it is connected but won't connect to internet or router.

What a mess I've made of things.

I'm not sure how to get you the information about The Rabbit.

Samba does not automatically make file-sharing happen. What steps have you taken to configure Samba?

Also, many distros come with Samba client installed, but Samba server often needs to be installed separately. Is Samba server installed and is the server daemon (sshd) running.

Finally, please surround terminal output with code tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button beneath the compose/edit post window. It makes posts much more readable.

Brain Skip: The Samba daemon is smbd. Apologies.

Frankbell Hi, thank you for responding. Since this post I have run a timeshift restore on the rabbit and it's working again.

Now both computers have an icon for each other. When I double click it says
Code:
opening (named) computer press cancel to stop
for a few seconds and then says
Code:
failed to retrieve list from server: connection timed out
.

Now that I know what question to ask, I will search online about samba configuration. Thank you.

But actually, I'm not sure I need samba as I'm not running any windows computers. My router says that there is a windows computer connected (by wire) to it and there's a windows network icon in my file system network page. I guess that would be another thread. I have to search for it first.

Thanks for reading my jumbled up, gobble-de-guck post.
