Unhappy Why my wireless card "atheros" run only as an acces point in "Master" mode.

I had someone compile the madwifi driver successfully,
I can get the atheros up and running but only
as an access point in "Master" mode.
I have the 2.6.18 kernel and debian/testing, installed
as of nov 4th. And, putting pre-up commands into
/etc/network/interfaces puts an error.
What can I do to make it work properly?

What's the complete output of iwconfig ath0 after setting mode to managed?

What's the output of ifconfig ath0?

of lsmod?
