Unable to use iwconfig on WUSB11 ver 2.8

Half way there!!

I have finally gotten my Linksys WUSB11 ver 2.8 access point to be recognized by Gentoo Linux running on 2.6.1 kernel. If I do a “ifconfig wlan0”, I get the proper MAC address and IP (including the gateway). So I know the driver I compiled is working. But when I try and configure the access point using “iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed” I get the error

Error for wireless request “set Mode” (8B06)
SET failed on device wlan0; Invalid argument

I think I’m missing a config file somewhere. I have turned off WEP.

I had lots of similar problems. Read the iwconfig man page. You might try this:

"iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed channel X (your channel) essid XXXXXX (your essid)"

Also you could post back the output of "iwconfig wlan0"

Good Luck

I feel like an idoit.. Turns out I had Wireless compiled as a module instead of directly into the kernel ! Doh ! recompiled and now it works. thanks for your suggestion.
