Suse 9.0 with Netgear Wireless Card cannot download pages from internet

I am new to Linux (2 days) and like alot of other people, having problems setting up my wireless connection.

Yast got nowhere with setting it up, it didn't even recognize that there was a network available (flashing light on card). So I made the following changes:

1) went into /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf

On both Netgear descriptions, changed bind "prism2_cs" to bind "orinoco_cs"

2) went into /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia

Set PCMCIA_SYSTEM="external"

3) went into /etc/sysconfig/hotplug

HOTPLUG_NET_DEFAULT_HARDWARE="pcmcia"

4) set-up in Yast a eth0 using orinoco_cs driver and deleted wlan-pcmcia

5) went into /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0

BOOTPROTO='dhcp'
MTU=''
REMOTE_IPADDR=''
STARTMODE='hotplug'
UNIQUE=''
WIRELESS_ESSID='Wireless'
WIRELESS_KEY=''
WIRELESS_MODE='managed'
WIRELESS_NICKNAME=''
WIRELESS_NWID=''

I got these kinds of changes off the internet and they seem to work better than how Yast set things up originally. The computer is able to turn it on and off, though I do have some error message during startup concerning the firewall with some file etc/resolv.conf. I have a solid green light and when I try to get on the internet, I don't immediately get an error message. However, it just seems to keep working and working, but doesn't download anything.

I've tried using iwconfig, but it doesn't recognize the wireless devices. Before I setup anything with eth0, it told me that wlan-pcmcia didn't exist (what Yast originally setup my card as) and it only listed lo and eth0. When I made eth0 wireless, that disappeared from the list too. I have no way that I know of to find out what is going on.

I would really appreciate it if somebody would give me some help!!

update

iwconfig and ifconfig are working for eth0 now. Here is what they say:

ifconfig:

Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:5B:3B:xx:xx
inet addr: 192:168.x.x Bcast: 192.168.x.xxx Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::209:5bff:fe3b:bxxx/xx Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:36 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0
RX bytes:3820 (3.7 Kb) TX bytes:3679 (3.5 Kb)

iwconfig:

IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"Wireless" Nickname:"Linux"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412GHz Access Point: 00:09:5B:47:xx:xx
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
Retry min limit:8 TRS thrff Fragment thrff
Encryption keyff
Power Managementff
Link Quality:72/92 Signal level:-34 dBm Noise Level:-147 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 INvalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

The card still doesn't give any error messages when trying to connect to the internet, but still doesn't download the pages either. I've tried disabling the firewall, but it doesn't affect anything.

Does this tell anybody anything about what is going on??

thanks
