SuSE 9.0 wireless neworking

i finally got to connect to my network and internet through my ethernet card, and i decided to take a whack at my wirelss card, but failed again.... and again... and agian.

i have noticed everyone else is having similar problems too. is the type of wireless card we have the issue because from what i have been reading, if you are trying to establish wireless networking with SuSE 9.0 its not going to work, unless you hack your way though it. has any one found a "universal" solution yet?

SuSE 9.0 has built-in support for wireless LAN cards using the Prism chipset. These include the D-link DWL650 (the original version with the flared antenna), the Netgear MA401 and numerous others. A chart listing the chipsets used by nearly every LAN card in existance can be found at:

http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html

The install itself is a piece of cake using YAST2. It will automatically detect the card and it is only necessary to run the configuration routine, and add a WEP key if needed. My DWL650 installed effortlessly in my Toshiba laptop.

It is possible, of course, to install cards using other chipsets, but it will be necessary to install a driver and tweak a configuration file or two.

I have Suse 9 working succesfully with a linksys wpc54G card using driverloader from linuxant. I had to add 2 entries into the wlan0 config file and that was about it.

I am very new to Linux (2 days old) and am having trouble getting my wireless to work on my Toshiba laptop. It is an integrated wireless card and so far the only info I can find on the card itself is that ht edriver is from Agere Systems and I can't find the actual manufacturer of the card itself. Can some one please give me any tips on why I can't seem to set up the connection correctly and where I can find out who the manufacturer of the card is. My laptop as model A20-S207.

thanx

I was wondering what changes he had to make to the wlan0 config file to make it work?

it works once you make the changes to the wlan0 config file.
I use a Toshiba Tecra 9100 with the inbuilt wlan card

the changes are somewhere on this board
sorry not to be anymore helpful, do a search here and you'll find it!

Kwifimanager is quite useful, as it tells you whether there's a connection - it's on the suse 9.0 disc

my problem is that the wifi connection only lasts 1 hour, but that 's on another thread.

Hey there. thanks for the help. I was able to solve my problem. Its seems that there was a conflict when I had the integrated wired ethernet card active at the same time as the integrated wireless card. when both were active I would be able to search the network wirelessly but I couldn't get on the internet. When I removed the wired configuration it then started to let me access the internet wirelessly.

Thanx again for all the help.

If anyone can suggest any really good begginers guides for linux I would be very appreciative.

Hi all

In order to succesfully get my wpc54g linksys card working on suse this is what i did:

get driverloader from www.linuxant.com

get the appropriate version for your distro and kernel version.

I have tried this both on Suse 9 and Fedora 1.

On Suse 9 after installing the program and the win drivers that are needed add the following to your wlan0 config file. (this was told to me by Linuxant support).

DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF='yes'
DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE='yes'

once you add these lines in , re run Yast (networking), and it should work flawlessly after that!!! I had no problem whatsoever after adding those 2 lines in.

Linuxant support said that this is a KNOWN PROBLEM WITH SUSE 9. Funnny I never knew about it and neither did a lot of others. Maybe either Suse or linuxant should do something about it eh?

good luck.

It wasn't easy but I have a Aironet 340 running on SuSE 9.0. The 340 is functionally the same as the 350.
