Ok, first off, forgive me for sounding hostile. I am frustrated to no end. I've been fighting with trying to get my wireless working on my laptop. I'm to the point where I am asking if there is anyone in the central florida willing to help. I will come to your house! Gimme a price quote, and I'll be there! I'm done trying. I can't do it.
Here we go, I tried Fedora Core 4 with ndiswrapper. Forget about it. Nothing. So I installed Suse hearing about it's much better hardware support. It detects it, but will not let me configure it. Tells me to install ipw-2200 firmware, WHICH I'VE DONE. I've tried ndiswrapper under suse as well. Nothing. I even bought a new pcmcia card and tried it with ndiswrapper. Nothing. Well, that one lit the card, but it still didn't work, nor was it shown as existing except under ndiswrapper -l, which it would show hardware present. And yes, I've tried the Intel Linux driver following the instructions, and got plenty of errors during the "make" command. And when the system boots, nothing but errors when ipw comes up as well as if(?).
At any rate, I've tried at least 4 different "step by step" accounts, followed many many many suggestions in forums based on others success, but I can't do it. I'm done trying on my own. Finito.
Here's what I have...
Toshiba M55-S3292 Notebook (Centrino).
The 10.0 release version of Suse.
uname -r returns 2.6.13-15-default
Intel 2200bg integrated wireless (works fine under winblows).
Can't think of anything else I can list that would help. But bottom line is, I basically either need REAL step by step instructions, or someone to do it for me. I do NOT want to keep using winblows on this machine, and I need it for school. I'm sticking with Suse, so if anyone can help me get this stupid thing going, I would be overjoyed! I'm desperate at this point.
Also keep in mind, I know VERY LITTLE about Linux. I just started using it about 2 months ago. I'm currently taking a class (introduction to Linux) in order to learn more, but it's just begun and so far all we've done is installed Fedora (easy). So re-building kernels, and things of that nature, just make my head spin. Unless I can get a REAL step by step as mentioned, then I'm sure I could do it. And I mean with links and all to any files I will need to download. Not "look for so and so, blah blah."
I apologize also for the topic, as I'm sure this has been covered, but none of the threads I've found have gotten my wireless working.
And I'm serious about bringing it to someone. If anyone is in my area (central florida, deland), I am willing to drive quite a ways for help! Anyone who can give a newbie a hand? Thanx a crapload!!
Well you've gotten farther than I have. When my ipw2200 comes up like that, the errors are within the range of "doesn't exist" and errors of that nature. Suse detects the card and lists it in the hardware devices, but it will not work, and everything claims it doesn't exist.
Before you start read the manual.
There is a good chance you wil have to build a new kernel with the right settings before you can install the new driver.

Yeah, that's where I can't figure that one out. When I tried it, errors galore. I'm sure it's just something I'm missing, but it's beyond my scope. Reading that manual confused the hell outta me. I tried it, but it didn't work.

I also read the manual and noticed that they have step 1 to 10, but you must choose at a certain moment one or the other method ( so al 10 steps ), the instructions are not very complex.
PS if you had used fedora core 3 you could have installed a simple rpm.
