ralink RT61 connects to an AP other than the specified one

Hey guys. I have recently got an Ralink RT61 based wireless PCMCIA card.

It works, but I have an odd problem. It ignores my settings for which accesspoint to connect to (my access point, essid "house") and connects to my neighbors instead (essid "Nang Flex Super Wireless shit").

I've checked and made sure everything in my /etc/network/interfaces is correct:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.135
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

iface ra0 inet static
address 192.168.0.113
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
wireless-essid house
wireless-key "my fackin' network key"

auto ra0
I'm using the latest version of the RT61 driver for linux, from ralink's website.

Anyone else know why this is happening?

Clearly your card has a taste for the awesome, and can't avoid that SSID your neighbor has.

Have you tried using iwconfig to get the card to authenticate to the AP via MAC rather than SSID? I had a wonky card (or more accurately, drivers) that sometimes refused to connect via SSID.

The command would be something like:

Code:
sudo iwconfig ra0 ap 00:0A:E6:D0:17:93
Obviously substituting the MAC of your router there.

I get you. The card seems to connect via essid fine; it's just that after I boot the computer or plug the network card in, it automatically connects to my neighbor's accesspoint, even though I specify the essid to connect to in /etc/network/interfaces.
After that, I can just do "iwconfig ra0 essid house key ***my key***" and it associates with my accesspoint fine.

I think you're on to something there with specifying the MAC address. Is there a way to specify a MAC address to connect to in the /etc/network/interfaces file?
