New to Linux and confused by wireless

This is my first forray into linux and i'm trying to set up my laptop

I currently have a dual boot dell inspiron 510m, running red hat 9, the kernel is 2.4.20-8.

I'm trying to set it up to work with a Senao/Enginius NL-2511CD Plus EXT2 Mercury PCMCIA card (i beleive it is Prism 3)

However every web source i find is confusing and i have little joy in decipering what is required as they change around and confuse the smaller details.
I've been trying to get it to work in ad-hoc networking mode for almost three days now and i just can't seem to get it to work.

Could someone please tell me the simple version (plus all the console cmds etc) of how to get this working

the current error message that is boggling me is

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): invalid argument "s:"

The simple solution would probably be to leave that old Redhat 9 behind and install Fedora Core 2 instead - Fedora Core is the new Red Hat releases (sort of).

I've found it VERY easy to get my wireless gear working on my IBM thinkpad with the lastest Fedora Core (+ latest kernel)
