Linksys WPC11 in slackware

I just got a new satellite A65 laptop and I put Slackware 10 on it. Uname -a gives:
Linux resnet 2.4.26 #6 Mon Jun 14 19:07:27 PDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
I have a linksys WPC11 wireless card that I'm trying to get to work.

Here's what I've tried so far:

I installed the newest version of ndiswrapper (version 10). The ndiswrapper website said:
Card: Linksys WPC11 v4
Chipset: Realtek RTL8180L
pciid: 1186:3300
Driver: Don't use driver that ships with card. Use driver for RTL8180L from (url removed because I havn't posted enough)
Other: See D-Link DWL-510 (the pci-id part). Works fine with 2.6 kernel and ndiswrapper 0.8.

So I downloaded the driver it told me to then tried to install it. It said "Installing net8180," with no error messages or anything. Then ndiswrapper -l says "net8180 hardware NOT present."

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you certain this is a v4?

The previous versions have the prism chipset, so if a modprobe orinoco_cs doesn't give any errors, what does ifconfig -a and iwconfig say?

Also, let's see what this shows: lspci -vn|grep -C2 1317

I tried installing ndiswrapper .08 and installed the xp drivers again. Now when I type ndiswrapper -l I get:

Installed ndis drivers:
net8180

I suppose that's better than net8180 NOT present, but I don't think it's workng yet either.

iwconfig and ifconfig still give the same thing

sounds like your heading in the right direction.

"lsmod" - is the ndiswrapper module loaded? If not, modprobe ndiswrapper
Lights on the card should come to life ifconfig should have a new device listed that says "UP" and "RUNNING"
and iwconfig should have the same device listed.

What does /var/log/messages say about your card?

I ran modprobe ndiswrapper and now lsmod shows ndiswrapper on the list. But iwconfig still has only eth0 and lo.

What would I be looking for in /var/log/messages?

please paste the output of lspci , and lspci -n (not sure, but maybe you can use lspcmcia).

i got my pci wifi card to work under slack 9. used ndiswrapper v 0.10 and the original RTL driver.
but before using the driver i had to edit the .INF file (look in the other thread with mandrake and belkin card problem - they helped me a lot) to change the product id/vendor numbers. with those changes you compile the ndiswrapper and load it as module (after that you should see the light on your card). then you have to run dhcpcd to obtain ip.
after that you should see wlan0 in ifconfig and be able to make connection with the net. to automate everything at startup you ave to add

/sbin/modprobe ndiswrapper to your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file and
/sbin/dhcpcd wlan0 to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file

pciid: 1186:3300

as it says on the ndiswrapper site, open the .INF file and change the vendor ID and product ID. then follow the instruction in my earlier post and that should work.

Thanks for the help.
I remember going to go trying to do that then couldn't find any line that hints at being the product or vendor id. I guess I just forgot to ask about that.

How do I replace the vendor and product ids?

look for dtring similar to this

ExcludeFromSelect = PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8180

so with 1186:3300 it will look like

ExcludeFromSelect = PCI\VEN_1186&DEV_3300

use your favorite text program do find and replace or do it manually and you should be ok.

Do I do that every place that I see XXXXEC&DEV_XXXX

do I replace all the 8180s with 3300s?

what about a line like this?
ExcludeFromSelect = PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8180&SUBSYS_818010EC

Did you ever get it working?

I'm also using Slackware 10 w/ kernel 2.4.26 and am having a helluva time getting it running. I've installed ndiswrapper 0.12 and modified NET8180.INF to have the right vendor/product IDs, but still ndiswrapper -l reports:

Installed ndis drivers:
net8180 driver present

with nothing about the card being found. dmesg shows nothing but "ndiswrapper: version 0.12 loaded (preempt=no,smp=no)" ifconfig -a shows just lo.

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? I'm happy to give you the output of any program, just tell me what you need.

Thanks!
