I'm running an iMac through a wireless Airport Extreme router connected to my cable modem. The iMac's Internet access is working great.
I'm trying to get an Internet-enabled Linux PC up-and-running, however, and I've run into a problem. I've sudo installed Knoppix 3.7 on my Dell Inspiron 8000, which has a D-Link DWL-G650 PCMCIA card. The card worked just fine with the network under WinXP. When Knoppix boots, it appears to see the card, and the card currently has one solid light on. I ran wlcardconfig, put in the SSID, and no change. I ran pump -i ath0, the lights flashed back and forth for a few seconds, but then I got an Operation failed error and still no Internet.
Does anyone here know what I need to do to get this PC on the Internet under Knoppix? I'd be willing to try another *nix if it comes to it, but if it doesn't work in Knoppix, I'm not sure another distribution would be any easier.
Thanks for your help. I booted up tonight and tried pump -i ath0 again, and for some reason it worked this time. I guess I just can't turn off the computer again.
I'll keep your advice handy if it doesn't work next time, though, it might be a better solution than the witchcraft and sorcery I've been using up until now. I was worried that it was a compatibility issue with the Airport drivers, so at least now I know that it can work.
