I need help with Wireless on my IBM R31

I have an IBM R31 Laptop, I also got a DWL 650+ network card with it for free from my office. It has a Lilo boot for Windows XP and Slackware 10.0. The Wireless works fine on the windows side but not on the Linux side. I really would like to dump the windows entirely and only use the Linux side. Or even get two Hard Drives, I am not a fan of the Double boot. That is something else thought... I can not get this card to work. I find out that it may not work with Linux at all (Thanks to linuxquestions.org). So this with the fact that I am a newb to Linux leads me to the question what next? What is the easiest PCMCIA card I can get (Maybe off Ebay) and cheapest to get this wireless working on the Linux side. Any and all help is welcome.

Thanks, I think I will check those out. I might have to lean to the DLink supported side. The sourceforge pages is about 2 years past my understanding level. But I will give her a go... I will let you know if I get it working.

The D-Link support link simply points to open source drivers for their various products. Your card requires the acx100 driver. There's also a wiki which you should read. http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page

The instructions are pretty straight-forward, although I understand about being new. Read, try, ask questions, repeat.

I'd upgrade to the current version of Slack while you're at it (10.2). If you can't make the acx100 driver work for some reason, and if you don't need 802.11G speeds or WPA security, get a classic ORiNOCO card or a Prism2.5 or 3 card on eBay.

Check the LinuxQuestions HCL for *lots* of choices.

I will read and repeat. I will try, of that I am sure. I didn't know 10.2 was out.. I guess I will have to find a download for that too. My first job is to get the Windows side working as it is broken (Windows broken, Imagine that) I use it for games and such. But being new I am afraid to distroy my Linux side. I use Lilo for my boot loader. I will give the card a try. If I can't get it I will look for one of the cards you suggest. Thanks again.

Maybe. There's no model number posted.

It's not the Classic ORiNOCO which is as close to plug & play as it gets in Linux, but is only 802.11B and does not support WPA.

The card shown is probably an Atheros (the chipset manufacturer) card. You'd need to get the MadWiFi driver for it. Compiling and installing would require a process similar to the one for the D-Link card. Not difficult if you know what you're doing, but if you were hoping for "just works," this is not the card for you.

Did you look here, yet? http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/
