Exclamation I have to set up the wlan0 up every time the system is rebooted

hi

I'm using SUSE 10.1 Linux with wireless network card. my problem is that: whenever I restart the system, the wireless configuration system is down and when I type ifstatus wlan0 in the terminal I get

fuzia:~ # ifstatus wlan0
wlan0 device: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
wlan0 configuration: wlan-id-00:11:95:d4:0b:da
wlan0 is down

so, I have to set up the wlan0 up every time the system is rebooted. (wlan0 is the name of the wirless).

that is I have to type

fuzia:~ # ifup wlan0 to get

fuzia:~ # ifup wlan0
wlan0 device: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
wlan0 configuration: wlan-id-00:11:95:d4:0b:da
SuSEfirewall2: Warning: ip6tables does not support state matching. Extended IPv6 support disabled.
SuSEfirewall2: Setting up rules from /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 ...
SuSEfirewall2: batch committing...
SuSEfirewall2: Firewall rules successfully set

the QUESTION is that: can I have the wireless configuration status up whenever I reboot the system?

much obliged

How did you configure the card?

I have always set up wireless networking through YAST, and the network interface has always started at boot-up. Of course, actually establishing a connection is a *whole* different matter...

Another option would be add <ifup wlan0> to one of the start-up scripts? Maybe someone with a better knowledge of system scripts could help here?

Timothy.

Are you using ndiswrapper? If so, just type "ndiswrapper -m" and if that gives you an error, type "sudo ndiswrapper -m".

From one linux newbie to another.

My bet is that /etc/networks/interfaces needs one more line, not sure if this is the right location in Suse (I'm on Debian) , but if you ahve that file, post it

Do you also have a NIC interface on your computer. If so, change it from starting on boot to starting on connection. It might be that when you reboot, the NIC card get set to a fallback address on the same subnet, and then with two cards on the same subnet, the wireless doesn't connect with the DHCP server.

The interface settings will be found in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0 is your interface is wlan0. Most settings are done per interface rather than in a global file. This file is modified by the YaST network interface setup dialog.
Can you post the output of "ifconfig". This will list both wireless and NIC interfaces.

Does the command "sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan wlan0" (if your interface is wlan0) show your AP?

I would recommend using wpa-psk for authentication for the home network.

One thing to try is to go into YaST, and first delete the interface. Then add it again and set it up. Sometimes a hard to find mistake will not be repeated.

How about a shell script in /etc/rcX.d/S99netstart (X being whatever runlevel you end up in.)
Using an editor type the following and save it as S99netstart in /etc/rcX.d

#!/bin/bash

ifup wlan0

##########################################################
then do
chmod 700 /etc/rcX.d/S99netstart
