Unhappy Help obtaining ip address

I live on campus and am using a wireless router without encryption (it's bridged) to connect to the internet the desktop I have connects via cat5 cables and and does so fine, but the laptop I have has problems getting an IP address>.< I have the wireless pcmcia card working by Ndiswrapper

ifconfig wlan0
Code:
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:98:BD:0D:59
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1550 Metric:1
RX packets:10871 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqeuelen:1000
RX bytes:771248 (753.1 kb) TX bytes:1240 (1.2 kb)
Interupt:11 Memory:19000000-190000ff
iwconfig wlan0
Code:
IEE 802.11b ESSID:"WRC_Network"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.427GHz Access Point: 00:90:96:3C:6E:46
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power:20 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
RTS thr:2432 B Fragment thr:2432 B
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:100/100 Signal level:-49 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
When I run kwifimanager It lists the correct network I'm on with a strong connection, but the "local IP unavailable" and "Encryption Active:

Sorry it's so long winded but I really don't know what I'm doing and want to be as thorough as possible It took me 4 days to get the lights on the card to come up using the Ndiswrapper and the windows driver. Also this card works and gets on the router through windoze

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
-Russ

encryption active?

Is your card configured to be using encryption righ now, even though the router may be putting out an unencrypted signal? It seemed that way, from what I read. That might be consistent with strong signal, but no data.

Correct!

Yeah My router is setup to broadcast without an encryption ie. no WEP or the sort. And I thought that might be the prob but don't know how to fix it, I can't even get onto my router 's config page -- I am a complete baby with networking -- I'll try any suggestions PLease help.

disable network card encryption

I don't use Slackware, but rather fedora. For me there is a graphical network device configuration window which allows me to either enter or remove the WEP hexadecimal key. When I switch from encrypted to unencrypted networks, I just alter that (and the ESSID similarly). Hopefully, you have something like that. Otherwise, find where you have something like the ifconfig-eth1 or ifconfig-wlan0 file, and you can edit it there manually in a text editor.
