Does the WEP Key Change in Firmware Upgrade

I have a basic Linksys WRT54GS router and I use Ubuntu 8.04.

I wanted to change the firmware using a third party upgrade. But before I do that, would the WEP Key change from what it is now?

There are other people in the family who have wireless laptops configured for the router and who may not appreciate finding out I changed the firmware and WEP key.

Thanks for any help.

I don't know what third-party firmware you want to install, but don't worry too much
about the WEP key. As long as you know it, you can put it back.

I'd be MORE worried about the firmware that you plan to install. BE SURE that it
works on not just your model but the specific version of your Linksys model. Do
your research carefully.

If you put in firmware that doesn't work, you may not be able to get back. It MAY
never work again. The other members of the family wouldn't appreciate THAT, for sure.

Caution is always a good thing. Yes, I did check that it does and it does.

I guess my concern was if I changed the firmware and suddenly the family members can't connect because the WEP key also changed, they give me dirty looks...and possibly a lot more!

:-)

But in the end, I may not do it at all under the principle of if it ain't broke....

I get 54 mbps according to Network Manager but the signal strength (through a bedroom wall) barely registers over 50 percent. Maybe that's good enough and I should leave it alone.

Thanks for the reply.

I like the "if it ain't broke..." principle, too.

Best wishes!
