Debian Wireless Card config

I'm going crosseyed looking for similar & recent posts.
I have a Broadcom chipset on a wireless card & don't know how to connect.

lspci | grep Broadcom
00:09.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) has helped me through b43-fwcutter and installing b43legacy driver. I'm relatively satisfied I have the 4603 rev 2, and I don't need ndis.

I'm still struggling with iwconfig.
my access point refuses to be anything but not-associated. Is this OK or not?
I am unsuccessful with setting the MODE -- all values I tried from the MAN page are invalid, and which mode would I want anyway?

If they're interesting:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"Mordor"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thr=2352 B
Encryption key:XXXX-XXXX-XX
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

dmesg returns many instances of the should be noted all my SSID, channel and key information disappear on reboot.

[ 7054.345846] b43legacy-phy0 warning: Unexpected value for chanstat (0x7C00)
This if nothing else is the question in my post. What can I do about this?
Is it because the ssid, channel & key info is defaulted?

broadcom, iwconfig, wireless
