connect to wifi WPA pre-shared key from a command prompt, how?

I have a Compaq Presario V5305WM laptop, and they told me in another thread, the only way to get the BCM43xx wifi card to work in Debian Etch, was to use ndiswrapper.

okay, but, how do I connect to a network using WPA pre-shared key, in Debian, or any flavor of linux for that matter, without using the network manager GUI applet?

because the GUI applet only works in KDE or Gnome, which is fine, but I don't always use KDE or Gnome, sometimes I boot into a shell prompt, but what if I wanted to boot into runlevel 3 for instance, and surf to a page using lynx, what then???

because I have no clue how to setup ndiswrapper in Debian, or how to connect to a network using WPA other then using the network manager applet in FC6, isn't there another way?

thanks

An example of the command I use:

Code:
/usr/local/bin/wpa_supplicant -Bw -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -iwlan0
