Automatic roaming between wireless networks, is it possible?

Hi all,
So I have my wireless system set up using WPA_SUPPLICANT, and running WPA_CLI as a deamon to allow network switching 'on the fly'
This is all very nice, but the next logical step, well at least to me, would be for the network to roam and switch automatically whenever a stronger signal is detected. I appreciate that I would need to have a list of all the networks I can connect to, but I was more specifically thinking of open/public access networks. e.g. My local college has wireless network access throughout the campus, but rather than being on the same subnet, it utilises different wan for each department, i.e. science is seperate to languages, which in turn is seperate to art etc. So as I move around, I am having to constantly swap networks to get the best signal strength/quality. So how do I achieve this switching of networks as an automatic facility, or is it something that is not possible?

TIA

Not really automatic, but easy.
With network-manager-gnome on Ubuntu, I can place the pointer over icon and all reachable networks are displayed with their relative strength of signal. I can click on any one, and it will disconnect current and reconnect quickly to the selected network. If I have connected to that network before, the settings are already stored and the connection is pretty immediate.
