Unhappy AT76c503a Wireless USB fails to work

I'm running Mandrake 10 and using a Compaq Wireless USB Network Card, which is the same as the DWL-120.
When I use Harddrake, it shows it under Unknown/Others and shown without a media class
I instaled the drivers from at76c503a.berlios.de for the 2.6 kernel. They were put into the kernel source folder. Do I have to rebuild the kernel?
BTW: the adapter disappeared in harddrake and the modules were loaded by hand by modprobe. But there is no wlan0 anymore.
