I'm using SLED10. I've also got a Windows XP installation on another partition, and the wireless card works fine on that, but not on Linux (the driver CD is for Windows).

Is there any way I can get it working?

The card I am using is made by Ralink, and the manufacturer code is EW-7128G.

There is a web page that seems to have Linux driver downloads:

But I don't see the code EW-7128G anywhere on the page. I am happy to try downloading one of the Linux drivers and giving it a go, but I don't know how to use the source code. Is installing a driver from source the same process as installing an application from source?

So basically, my question is: could someone look at that page, tell me which driver they think I need, and tell me how I should go about installing it?

I don't know about Suse, but on most OSes, that card should work out of the box. It uses an rt2x00 driver, which is normally included with kernels higher than 2.6.17.

Try poking around at it from your GUI networking manager.

See if lsmod shows an rt2x00 module.

If you decide you do need to download a driver, get it from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

If your card is a PCI,
Try running lspci -v
If you have a rt2561t you will need the RT61_Linux_STA_Drv1.1.0.0.tar.gz
All the different drivers are confusing but, if you read carefully on the Download Page you will see most of the others are for USB or 64 bit OS.

You may further need to decide on encryption. I have a built in ralink card which does WEP and WPA. At this point WEP encryption can be broken in 1 minute ( according to recent articles). WPA is a little more secure. It does require you to get wpa_supplicant and configure wpa_supplicant.conf

The easiest way to install I found to install a wifi card was to remove network manager and install WICD. It's a python based network manager which deals better with encryption. The latest umbuntu ( 7.04) comes with many of the WIFI drivers included. SLED may have one. You can modprobe the kernel to see if you already have a driver.
