I had previous problems getting one of my alternate Linux distros on the VirtualBox. This time around I was successful an a the end of the installation it asked for a reboot. I did this and came a local host login screen. I proceeded to login in using my username but when I entered my login, which I took to be Root. It came back as incorrect, I had checked an discovered that the password would not be visible when entered. I carefully made sure that any upper case letters were so marked and reentered the Root password but again it came up as incorrect. I logged in with my username and my secondary non root password again be careful to be certain any uppercase letters were so marked. This time arond I did not get an error window and I thought here we go but to my chagrin the login bar disappeared to be replaced by the black screen and the local login window.
The distro I installed using the Vitualbox was Mageia 3 KDE 4. I have reaced a point where I am in need ofsome assistance. My primary Distro is Ubuntu 13.04, the virtualbox is VB 4.2.18.
When I did a search for similar threads one had where a reinstall was made. I installed using a ISO for a DVD, could I do something similar? I may have missed somethign in the intial installation that a reinstall might show but then again if I did not know what I might have missed I could miss it again.
So, any and all help would be helpful and I'd be grateful. TNA
One thing you can do is reboot, then edit Grub:s boot-menu and add "init=/bin/bash.
You will get a bash shell prompt, reset the password and reboot normally.
... and unfortunately you probably have Grub2 which makes it pretty difficult to do that boot menu-editing. Read carefully and you'll probably (or maybe) find the right place. As nothing is changed permanently you can test it risk-free.
