Recompiling Kernel on XEN vm

Hi all,

I need to compile a module for my kernel on a XEN virtual machine.
It's technically possible?
I do not think that it is possible to compile the whole kernel.. right?

Does someone can suggest me some tutorial on this issue?
Thank you!

Given the source, I cannot see why you cannot compile it.

Do you have a /usr/src/linux directory?

Otherwise, you may download it from kernel.org.

Hi, do you know what is para-virtualization?

VMs running any linux distro inside xen are no different than that same distro running on bare metal.
You can compile whatever you want (yes, that includes the linux kernel) on a VM running linux.

Note that you did not specify which kernel you wanted to compile so your question is unwarranted, but since you asked, I had written the original script to port pv-ops in Slack.

See http://lists.slackbuilds.org/piperma...ly/006241.html

Nevertheless, Xen is generally booted from xenlinux rather than pv-ops so you need to check.

This is almost true. You have to keep an eye on

# uname -m

that is used in slackpkg and slackbuilds because it might give wrong ARCH if you have a Slack64 dom0 and a Slack32 domU (or the other way round).

Hi,

I still do not understand how it is possible.
I've no grub or lilo on my (virtual) machine!
How can I boot a custom kernel??
I've NO access to xen server. I'm talking about a XEN vm offered by Amazon.

The kernel has to reside in dom0 if you need to boot from it. If you just want a module, probably you do not really need that. I think you can install the module in your modules directory (/lib/modules/*) and modprobe it. I did that to test the watchdog module, but it was already installed on my Slack VM
