In one of my server i installed vmware ESXi5.1. In that i configured two instances, one is mail server and another one is ldap server.
Raid 10 is configured in that machine. Now we have a space issue.
So we purchased one Synology NAS. Actually our plan to move mail server instance to NAS and make it up. But for some reason it is not working .I don't know why. Earlier i moved one instance to another server and it worked. But in this i don't know why it is not working
. Can any one help me in this.
Actually our plan to move mail server instance to NAS and make it up.
Am I understanding this correctly.
You want to take a NAS, a network attached storage server, but you don't want to use it as a network attached storage server, you want to run a virtual instance of a mail server in it because of...storage issues?
Take it from me: using a synology or Netgear nas to run vms from is a really, really bad idea. If you're going to insist upon doing it, use Nfs, instead of iSCSI.
BTDT. It didn't end pretty.
I'd suggest moving the vms off your ESXi server, and reconfiguring your raid to raid5.
What advanage did it give you to put the virtual mail server on a NAS?
When you're using a consumer NAS, you think you're getting a cheap and easy source of storage-and you are-but you are getting a cheap and easy source of non-server-grade storage.
I used to work at a place that was real stingy. They wanted their cake and to eat it, too. They wanted the advantages of a vmware infrastructure, they wanted redundant storage, but refused to actually pay for it.
Long story short : over time, cracks formed in the surface of an infrastructure held together with consumer or small-mid size company hardware. Near the end, our faith in such a system was pretty shaken, and we laid out the money for real storage. That was only after the trials and tribulations and slowdowns and errors and assorted issues need to be worked through.
A hard lesson to live through, and a hard lesson to learn.
Thanks, that's a new wrinkle for me, I've only ever used a NAS in relation to a mailserver to store local users mailboxes, which is the bulk of the mail server storage requirements.
@Sompap, could you try that instead to address your virtual mail server/storage problems? If you pushed the mailboxes to a map on the SAN, how far down would your image shrink?
