installing VMware after fedora and Xp have been installed
Hello,
New into this subject. Can Installed vmware in the same machine where dual fedora and Xp already exist? Or do I have to wipe these OSs in order to virtualization the system.
I'd imagine the best bet would be to install VMWare onto a seperate disk and remove the fedora and XP disk(s) during the install. You should then be able to edit your boot loader settings from within fedora to include the VMWare partition. I'm not sure how the VMWare installer manages partitions etc.
Alternatively, you could look at install Xen on top of/into your Fedora install. That way, you can keep both existing OSs exactly as they are and boot into the Fedora-Xen kernel as required
You can also install VMWare on a running XP or Fedora, your pick which you prefer (I'd prefer a Linux host obviously, for more than flavour: I think Linux has better support for virtualization as well as better handling of large memory and being more stable (a BSOD may render your virtual machine broken))
It depends on which version of VMWare you are using. In my original post I had assumed that you were using ESX server, which includes a minimal OS install (i.e. it would be a third OS on your PC).
If you are using the free version of VMWare, there is a download for Windows available on their website - there may be a Linux one as well, but I've always used Xen so I'm not sure.
The free version is just a simple download and install - it runs like any other application you may have installed.
The ESX server is a different proposition completely and I'd advise you to get as much documentation from their website as possible before trying to install it. You will need to do quite a bit of planning etc in advance in order to get the most out of it
