LUG In Las Vegas, NV

If there are any users of any Distribution of Linux in the Nevada area Las Vegas, Please contact me here I run Slackware and have become pretty proficient at getting it running in 45 minutes after some errant program writes information that will not let it be removed and then reinstalled.

Hardware Specialist mostly. Software

Slackware 10.1 2.4.6 Kernal and going to chance the tutorial on getting it set to the 2.6.11 that I just ftp'ed.

If it crashes then I will re do the reiserjs format one more time and install the os and have it running in a jiffy.

If you are interested in participating in a Linux User Group in Las Vegas, NV please feel free to PM or Post a reply here. Thank you.

Ok, when there are enough we can get a good role of users and maybe meet somewhere in the Summerlin area in the north west area. We can communicate through here and keep contacts for now.

So what OS of Linux, Distro build and so on?

As you see I have this one, and the Kernel is 2.4.29 and I have been debugging and testing 2.6.11.5 for days now and trying to perfect how it is managed. and then when I finally get it down to tacks, I am going to try to post a detailed instruction on what needs to be done for a proper install of this kernel.

I use slackware and I have had to redo it and reinsall it because the Kernel 2.6.11.5 crashed everything on my system because I use the reiserjs format and jfs.s kernel so the new kernel does not like this. I also have SuSe 9.2 Live CD, Knoppix Live CD, Gnoppix Live CD, Debian 3.0r4 of which I could never get to work and FreeBSD 5.3 that made my 30GB HDD a 528MB HDD. So out of all of them this Slack has been the most reliable. I was going to try the FDC 3.0 but opted not to. Slack has been very good to me. Anyways when more from the Vegas Area comes around, we can begin getting the meetings setup.

Be well and continue to comminicate here.

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time Debian Sid user, moved to Vegas about 6 months ago after some time in the Army.

I've never been in a LUG before, but like the idea of sharing knowledge and experience with one-another and introducing others to Linux.

I run a Debian based server at work, I am currently on contract with ADT Security as a computer tech/developer. I have a bit of experience with Mod_Perl on Apache and MySQL.

I've used other distros, but always come back to Debian... It was my first (which was kindof a tough distro to start out on), and I just can't bring myself to stay with anything else for long. Love Ubuntu as well, it's the one I suggest to people wanting to try Linux.

Anyway, I hope I can help you guys out with anything and it'd be nice to have others to go to with problems because I'm the only Linux user I know right now.

Ok great that makes 3 now. I run Slackware as you know from the posts. I had been running a Windows XP machine for a while till it decided to take a toast on me so I went out and looked for many a distro. Debian FreeBSD Slack, Knoppx, Gnoppix, SuSe 9.2 Live CD, and after fighting with Debian to even install, I took the chance and played with the Live CD's for a time, then took the plunge. Slackware 10.1 on CD and readyto install, so I did and have not been happier.

I am currently unemployed and has been doing Tech work for 23 some years, Ran SCO Unixware 2.1.2 for a time, OS/2 and Various Windows machines.

Built all my own systems, and occasionally goes out and helps users get setup with Win machines, as they are afraid of Linux. But I tell them one day, your system will grow out of M$ and move to the Open Source market. Then it will be a Real Personal Computer. Anyway now that there is 3 of us, maybe we can find a meeting place somewhere and talk about the LVLUG on a whole and decide how to go about making it a viable Resource to all the users here for linux support, news and education, tips, tricks and the like. I am pretty proficient at making this install. Setting it up and making it work.

So to you both, from the Linux Girl in LV, take care and lets see what comes of this,.

Ok, as soon as these others get back, we can work out some details, meeting area and most of all, the fun we will have talking about Linux all distros. The difference is, it's all Linux, the desktop and how it communicates are all that is differnet. The base of Linux is still Linux.

The evening is best for all it seems and I think maybe a Saturday say, 6:00PM PST make about a good time and day here?

Some like Tuesdays, so we need to have others chime in here for best time/day events and then we can work out the place. Maybe a book store would be good. They have reading material on Linux there too, so that would be optimum. Borders has a good setup, as does barnes and noble. They would allow late evening things too. So this is an idea to run around here.

Takers, givers, chime up, the time is getting near. LVLUG can become a reality if we grow.

Also I will be giving some tips on the new 2.6.11.6 Linux as I have been debugging it for a week now. Finally got it partly working. I have an idea of what it is, and will be looking for a new NIC soon, the Network Everywhere is outdated, a nice 3 Com Card will be my next one, as they are made with Linux in mind. Go to the 3com site and see. This card is good for the 2.4.29 Linux but is not a happy camper with the 2.6.11.6 Linux. But I may have a way around it. I just have to work on it.

Ok, additions to this as of 16:27

Finally got the place tied down and saturday as the day. Now tomorrow being sat, I am going to the book store and talk to them about a saturday meetting of the LVLUG - Las Vegas Linux User Group meetings being held there on a say monthly saturday evening around 6:00PM to 8:00PM or later if we get too involved. They have a nice coffee bar with some food and drinks so we can have some sustinance and drink, while we discuss Linux and the future meetings, since this will be the first. At this time, I see no reason to begin a Dues set, since this is a bang it out and see if we can make it work idea. If this goes well, then we can work out newsletter information, fees for that, usually for me, 2 ink carts 30.00 and 34.00 respectively for my HP 1215vm Photosmart using CUPS local to print. I have done newsletters and information packs for some time, using Word Perfect before and now will use K-Word or Abi Word, I as of yet stll have to DL OOo suite of editing tools, so that is in the future.

Topics of Discussion will include
Linux 2.6.XX
KDE
GNome
Distributions what you like or dislike.
Various Window Managers that some Distro's include.

Disk format oprions - ext2 - ext3 or reiserjfs, which is right for you.

How to make your display better without the manufaturers driver.

Minutes of the meetings. To be taken by someone who can write fast or has a good recollection of the meetings.

Please respond here for other details and possible call # for any last minute details of the location of the meeting.

Store is located at Rainbow and Lake Meade in the Best of the West Shopping area.

PM me if you are seriously interested for getting the best out of the Linux Distro you are using.

Or YIM me. I use Kopete and YIM so am on regularly with some other friends I help with things.

Well I have discoverd something very nice, an actual LVLUG here Site is at Las Vegas Linux User Group. So this officially closes my post, and opens the new one, to an already established user group.

Thank you to all who seemed to be interested, so now I have found what I was hoping to start, and now does not have to.

So my post to start a LVLUG is officially closed.
