XSM loading on boot???

I am running Gentoo on a Dell Inspiron 8500 (laptop). I have XDM set to run at startup and to log me in automatically. When I reboot now I see the nVidia splash screen, but then I see something for XSM and a terminal with a bash prompt. This problem has never happened before, and it began this morning. I have not installed anything new nor have I changed any configuration files. Does anyone know how to solve this? I have tried to re-emerge X, but to no avail. I do not have any packages for XSM installed except for what comes with X itself. I would appreciate any insight into this issue. Thanks.
