Has anyone here ever used XPde? If so, how good does it run? Is it like KDE or Gnome that takes lots of resources and takes time to load.... or is it like fluxbox or XFCE that's stripped down and loads quick? It doesn't look as bloated as KDE does, but doesn't look like it would run like a stripped down WM either...
Tried it. Didn't get it to work for normal users (i.e. only root could run it). Was not impressed by its features, and some didn't work. Uninstalled it.
If you want a Win-doze GUI, you're usually going to have to use KDE with a Win-doze theme package. If you want a stripped-down WM or desktop environment that still looks cool, use WindowMaker, IceWM (this has a win9x theme available), or XFCE.
1. How does someone your age acquire so much advanced hardware?
2. With your aforementioned advanced hardware, why would you want a stripped down WM, when you have so much RAM to spare?

I dont understand? I'll tell you the order in which I got them.
When I was like 10 or something, I got the HP. Getting older, and the HP getting really outdated, I got a, my Dad just got a free box of stuff from someone in his job, It had a IBM in it, P4 1.6GHz, no ram... he said it didnt work, but my Dad fixed it. Then one time, I open up the IBM, but a drive cage inside accidently cut a IDE cable, so I switched back to the HP. Complaining to my Dad, the the HP is crap, I got the cheapest thing I could find the, the Dell. It got the job done, I got it for $250 w/out monitor (I had plenty already). THen the Dell started to have some problem, It would have the CPU run at a 100% all the time, I redid windows, and it got even more screwed up. Since my Dad has upgraded his computers a couple times, he gave me the Icecube, and since I play the game World of Warcraft, I NEED a good computer to run it on. Untill recently, the Icecube started to have some wierd power issues, so I got a new mobo, put all the stuff from the icecube on there, and works perfectly.
The Biosstar computer was, that I had so many extra parts laying around, I was only short on a motherboard.
eMachines I found in the trash, and I upgraded it for fun.
The SE/30 was 25$ at the thrift store, my Dad loved to use macs untill win95 and pentiums came out, he also has a really big collection of mac software and floppies, so I got some old games on it... it's really fun.
LC was free from my old school.
Powerbook 520c was a B-DAy present (I wanted it, I cant remeber why).
Looking up what aforementioned meant, I dont want to put linux on one of my nice computers. I got files and crap on there... or for some reason.
Which computer runs linux? If we know its stats, we may be able to help you find a Win-doze-like WM for you.
PS I have an LC II motherboard and two LC IIIs, acquired in a similar fashion. Once I get a 68882 FPU and a bigger hardrive, I'm losing Mac OS 7.5 and replacing it with Debian.
I acctually gutted the LC recently, thinking I could probably find some low profile (skinny and small), mobo. Still looking, but I just goofed around w/ the LC mobo for a while, and threw it away. I heard they are a dime a dozen, so who could it hurt? You could go to my local thift store and see lots of them for cheap. (LCs)(not LC motherboards)
EDIT: Well, my main computer (the P4 2.26) has windows on it... and it's gonna stay that way, I sure don't want something in the swap or mbr to get screwed up. I'm also afraid that partitioning the XP inhalf, would cut some of the system files off= not working. I defrag the drive, but it's using some files, and doesnt want to move them.
The celeron533 has PCLinuxOS on it, the PII400 has a I think an unregistered copy of xp on it, but I'm alwasy short on IDE cables, so can't do anything on that. I gave the emachines to my sister, Dell doesn't have a heatsink on it, P4 1.6GHz, doesnt have a PSU right now... uh that all of them? My dad also gets pretty mad when he starts to see computers everywhere, I usually have them all in my closet.
In that case, if you want a speedy but functional WM for the Celeron-533, you're probably best using IceWM or FVWM (both have a win95-esque theme available).
You're right--the LC and LCII computers are worthless. lowendmac.com gave them a rating of "Road Apple," and I can't say I disagree. The LC III is pretty stable, though.
